I believe in using many techniques to communicate with students.  These include clear verbal instructions, picture cues and posters.  I ensure classroom expectations are known, displayed and referred to.  I also use simple hand gestures and facial cures to help students understand what is expected, such as "thumbs up" or "thumbs down."
