4 Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
4.5 Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethically
Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching.
I believe that ICT presents many opportunities to support students in deepening their understandings of their learning and the world around them both within and outside the classroom. As ICT increasingly becomes a part of our everyday lives it is crucial to consider how to engage students with ICT in a safe, responsible and ethical manner.
If used inappropriately, ICT has the potential to have negative impacts on someone's life in regards to their personal image, or even their safety. For this reason it is crucial to model behaviours in the classroom that support appropriate use of technology, the protection of students' digital footprint and so that they are able to become positive digital citizens. The school that I work at has a very thorough ICT Studetn Policy that I am very familiar with as the students in my current Year 5 class have a 1:1 student laptop programme. Our school polict can be viewed by clicking the following link:
The student's and their parents also sign User agreements. An Early Childhood and Middle/Upper Primary example of this can be seen pictured to the left.
These bring children's attention towards such issues of cyberbullying, demonstrating the safe use of social media and the importance of understanding privacy settings, and how to access safe websites for use at home and school.
