6 Engage in professional learning
6.1 Identify and plan professional learning needs
Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs.
The Australian Professional Standards have been established to ensure uniformity regarding the expectations required in order to meet the needs of school children with in Australia. Theses standards are based upon ongoing extensive educational research. Overall they are aimed at providing guidelines as to the acceptable minimum standards required by the teaching profession.
I am committed to the Professional Learning Partnership. This is a professional learning process or relationship involving a Professional Learning Partner and a teacher that can support teachers to improve their professional practice. It enables teaches to take responsibility for their own learning journet, to celebrate strengths and address weaknesses to develop best practice.
My current Professionall Learning Partner is the Assistant Principal in Administration, Adrian Torrese. He is also my tandem partner in the Year 5 class that I teach so therefore we have a good sense of trust and rapport together. Adrian has helped me develop target goals and I have used the AITSL Illustrations of Practice website for ideas. I actively implement agreed actions. My PLP checks in with me at the beginning and end of each term to see if I am achieving my goals. We have a new focus each Semester.
As my class of Year 5's have 1:1 laptops, my current goal is based on Standard 2.6 : Implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students. I attended a Professional Development opportunity with Ben Saulsman (Numeracy Consultant K-10 at Catholic Education of Western Australia) and have specifically targeted this area in my Math Block.
