4    Create and maintain supportive and         safe learning environments

4.3   Manage challenging behaviour

Demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches to manage challenging behaviour.

I believe that within any classroom setting, there is a need to establish clear expectations for appropriate behaviour.  A stimulating, engaging and challenging class and school environment are important in fostering acceptable social habits. A climate of mutual respect and good student/teacher relationships promote positive behaviour.   It is also vital to follow the school you are working at behaviour management policy to support the creation and maintenance of a supportive and safe learning environment in which all students have the right and opportunity to engage in learning.

I always communicate clear guidelines for behaviour ( a set of class rules that children help decide on) or posters that can be referred to that model desired behaviours (eg: the "Give Me Five" poster that I used on my Phase 2 prac to highlight listening expectations) and consequences for misbehaviour are necessary to support appropriate conduct.  All children need to be made aware of the consequences of negative behaviours.  At my current school this is in the form of time out or recess and lunchtime detentions.

Parents are notified of bad behaviour via SEQTA and if there are repeated negative behviours parent meetings and goal setting occurs.

At a personal level, I believe that it is important to support all students in developing a love for learning in which they become intrinsically motivated to succeed and achieve learning outcomes, rather than always relying on extrinsic gain, such as rewards.  However, I also believe that in an Early Chldhood setting, children need to be given positive feedback for making postiive choices so that this intrinsic motivation develops.  On my recent Phase 2 prac utilised several positive reward systems including the school's faction token system, Making Jesus Real Awards, Merit Award certificates at assemblies (to highlight great student achievement),  giving out stickers, stamps and little "gold glitter stars" for extra special work efforts and awarding mini certificates at the end of each day, praising desired behaviours such as great listening/sharing etc...
